A former Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), Mike Ejiofor, has urged the Federal Government to take U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent allegations of Christian genocide in Nigeria and his threat of military action with utmost seriousness.
Ejiofor, who spoke on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday, advised the government to immediately activate diplomatic channels to prevent the issue from spiralling into a major international crisis.
“I think the Federal Government should take Donald Trump seriously. I’m calling on the Nigerian government to explore all diplomatic channels,” he said.
Trump, in a post on his Truth Social platform last week, accused Nigeria of permitting the mass killing of Christians and threatened to respond “with force.”
He also announced that the U.S. government had redesignated Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) over alleged violations of religious freedom.
“If the Nigerian government continues to allow the killing of Christians, the U.S.A. will immediately stop all aid and assistance to Nigeria and may very well go into that country ‘guns-a-blazing’,” Trump had written, claiming he had directed the U.S. Department of War to prepare for “possible action.”
While the Nigerian government has dismissed the allegations as unfounded, insisting that religious freedom is fully guaranteed, Ejiofor cautioned against underestimating Trump’s rhetoric.
“It is a very serious matter when you talk about Donald Trump. He says what he wants to do — and he goes ahead to do it. So, it is not something we can gloss over. It is a threat,” he warned.
The former DSS chief said Nigeria must continue to handle its internal security challenges responsibly but stressed that proactive diplomacy was vital to avert any breakdown in relations with Washington.
“This is not something to ignore. We must move quickly through diplomatic means to manage the situation in and defend the country’s sovereignty,” Ejiofor added. explore all diplomatic channels,” he said.
