A medical doctor, Dr. Chinonye Nwachukwu, who was abducted in Abuja three weeks ago, has regained her freedom.
The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) branch, confirmed her release in a statement yesterday by its Chairman, Dr. Emeka Ayogu.
Nwachukwu, a Ukraine-trained physician, was kidnapped on October 21 while on her way to Garki Hospital, Abuja.
Her abduction sparked outrage and concern within the medical community.
According to Ayogu, the doctor was rescued in Gwagwalada on Sunday night and has since been receiving medical attention.
“After almost three weeks in captivity, Dr. Nwachukwu has been freed by her abductors. She was rescued safely in Gwagwalada and is currently receiving adequate medical care,” he said.
Ayogu expressed gratitude to security agencies and all those who worked tirelessly for her release, describing the development as a relief to the association and the medical profession in general.
He also thanked colleagues and the public for their prayers and solidarity during the period of her ordeal, adding that she would soon be reunited with her family.
The NMA-FCT chairman prayed for the continued safety of medical personnel and their families, expressing hope that such an incident would not occur again.
