Two Nigerian nationals have been sentenced to one year imprisonment each for attempting to obtain Ghana’s National Identity Card with forged documents.

The convicts — Ike Isaac, who also identified himself as Alex Kwesi Brown Appiah, and Emmanuel Innocent Egbe, who claimed the name Innocent Emmanuel Kodom — were jailed by the Madina District Court II after being found guilty of presenting false information and possessing forged documents during the Ghana Card registration exercise.

Their conviction was announced in a statement by the National Identification Authority and signed by its Head of Corporate Affairs, Williams Ampomah E. Darlas.

According to the NIA, the men were charged with providing false information to registration officials, contrary to Section 40(1)(a) of the National Identity Register Act, 2008 (Act 750), as well as possession of forged documents under Section 166 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

Delivering judgment on Friday, November 7, 2025, the court handed each offender a 12-month sentence for providing false information and 13 months for possessing forged documents. The terms will run concurrently.

The court also ordered that the convicts be deported to Nigeria after serving their sentences. They are currently held at the Nsawam Prisons.

The NIA said the successful prosecution underscores its commitment to protecting the integrity of the Ghana Card system, which serves as the country’s primary source of identity for lawful residents.

It commended the Ghana Police Service, the CID Unit attached to the Authority, the Office of the Attorney-General, and other collaborating agencies for their role in securing the conviction.

The Authority further warned that offences such as impersonation, falsification of documents and other identity-related fraud carry stiff penalties and will continue to be met with strict enforcement.
