Pregnant woman, three others dead as water tank collapses
Tragedy struck Zugai village in Roni Local Government Area of Jigawa State when an overhead water tank collapsed on residents who had gathered to fetch water, killing four women, including a pregnant woman, and injuring several others.
The tank, which supplies water from a solar-powered borehole, reportedly gave way while dozens of villagers were standing beneath it.
Eyewitness Imrana Miko said, “Three people died on the spot, while many others sustained injuries and were rushed to the hospital.”
Another resident attributed the collapse to structural weakness, explaining that the supporting pillars had deteriorated under the weight of the fully filled tank.
Confirming the incident, Chairman of the Maranda Development Association, Comrade Musa Lawal, described the scene as heartbreaking.
The Chairman of Roni Local Government Council, Dr. Abba Ya’u Roni, said strong winds contributed to the tragedy.
“The incident was caused by a strong wind while people were busy fetching water.
The wind pushed the tank, and it collapsed on the people,” he explained.
Dr. Roni added that the council had taken responsibility for all medical bills of the injured, while extending condolences to the families of the deceased and praying for their eternal rest.
