The Kwara State government has ordered the immediate closure of schools in five local government areas in the Kwara South senatorial district as part of measures to tackle growing security concerns in the region.
Dr. Lawal Olohungbebe, the state commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, in a statement, explained that the government has activated proactive security measures to ensure the safety of schoolchildren.
The closure affects schools in Ifelodun, Ekiti, Irepodun, Isin, and Oke Ero local government areas, with the directive taking immediate effect.
“The measures also cover the boarding schools in Irepodun, which could be targets of the criminals who are running for cover amidst widening security operations.
“The measure may remain in place while awaiting further security clearance for normal activities to resume.”
The commissioner stressed that the decision reflects the state’s determination to curb the activities of kidnappers and prevent the exploitation of schoolchildren as human shields during ongoing security operations.
Parents and school authorities have been urged to comply with the directive to avoid exposing students to potential security risks while the state security apparatus continues its intensified operations.
Security agencies have reportedly increased patrols in the affected communities, while local leaders have been engaged to monitor developments and provide timely updates on the safety of residents and students.
Education stakeholders in the state have expressed support for the government’s actions, acknowledging the need to prioritize the safety of learners amid rising criminal activities in the region.
