A Saturday morning fire has razed two rooms in an eight-room residential building at Agboola Compound, Ita-Kure, in the Ilorin West Local Government Area of Kwara State.

PUNCH Online learnt that the blaze, which started around 10:33 a.m., was successfully contained by operatives of the Kwara State Fire Service, preventing it from consuming the entire structure.

Confirming the incident in a statement, the agency’s spokesperson, Hassan Hakeem Adekunle, said preliminary investigations linked the fire to a power surge.

He noted that firefighters responded promptly after receiving a distress call, adding that their swift intervention averted a major disaster.

“The coordinated and gallant efforts of our firefighters ensured that only two rooms were affected, while the remaining rooms were fully protected,” he said.

Adekunle urged residents to install surge protectors and engage certified technicians for routine electrical inspections.

Also speaking, the Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Falade Olumuyiwa, warned that many household fires stem from poor wiring and the use of substandard electrical materials.

He advised homeowners to prioritise electrical safety, stressing that preventive measures can drastically reduce the risk of fire outbreaks.

“Taking preventive steps significantly reduces the risk of electrical fires in residential areas.

We urge residents to be vigilant and proactive,” he added.

The service reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property across the state.

Kwara has witnessed several fire incidents in recent weeks, many attributed to electrical faults and improper handling of power appliances, especially during the dry season when fire risks are heightened
