The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation has confirmed the arrest of a truck driver whose bid to evade enforcement officers triggered panic and left several vehicles damaged along the Ojota–Maryland axis on Tuesday.

In a statement released on November 25, the Ministry said operatives of the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) had stopped the truck at Ojota after identifying several safety breaches, including a broken windscreen, faulty braking system, invalid documentation and an unsecured container load.

Officials said the driver attempted to escape, speeding toward Maryland and hitting three vehicles as he tried to outrun the enforcement team.

The Ministry explained that the driver’s reckless flight posed further danger to other motorists before VIS officers managed to halt the vehicle.

Worsening insecurity: Pressure mounts for establishment of state police

The truck has since been impounded, and the driver is set to face prosecution.

Director of Public Affairs Bolanle Ogunlola praised VIS operatives for their prompt intervention, noting that the incident highlights the ongoing threats posed by non-compliant heavy-duty vehicles on Lagos roads.

The Ministry appealed to motorists to obey traffic and safety rules, stressing that ensuring safer highways requires the collective effort of all road users.
