Tragedy has struck the Anglican Communion in Kaduna as the Priest-in-Charge of Ebenezer Anglican Church, Ungwan Maijero, Venerable Edwin Achi, has been confirmed dead while in the custody of his abductors.
DAILY POST reports that Achi was kidnapped alongside his wife and daughter when bandits broke into his residence in Nissi community, Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna, on October 28, 2025.
The cleric and his family were said to have recently moved into the neighbourhood before the attackers struck.
After their abduction, the criminals contacted the family to demand N600 million ransom.
Achi hails from Umuaja in Ukwuani Local Government Area of Delta State.
In a statement, the church confirmed his demise and prayed for the release of his wife and daughter.
“With heavy hearts and deep sorrow, the Diocese of Kaduna, Anglican Communion, announces the passing unto glory of The Venerable Edwin Achi, Priest-in-Charge of Ebenezer Anglican Church, Ungwan Maijero.
“Ven. Edwin Achi, who was kidnapped alongside his wife on 28th October, 2025, has been confirmed dead,” it said.
The church described the development as a devastating blow to the Diocese and to all who had been touched by the late priest’s ministry.
The wife of the clergyman and his daughter remain in captivity, with the kidnappers said to be insisting on their ransom demand despite Achi’s death.
The tragedy comes amid worsening insecurity across Nigeria, particularly in the North, a situation that international observers—including the United States—have described as alarming for Christian communities in the region.
