Tragedy as petrol tankers fall within 24 hours in Oyo

Oyo State recorded three separate petrol tanker accidents within 24 hours across different locations.

The first incident occurred on Wednesday at Lasi 2, Liberty Academy, Odo-Ona Elewe, Ibadan, when a Mack trailer with registration number DEP175XB (Lagos), laden with 33,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), veered into a ditch, spilling its content. No casualty was recorded.

A second crash was reported on Thursday at Idi Oro area of Ogbomoso, where another PMS-laden tanker, said to be carrying 45,000 litres, somersaulted after the driver reportedly lost control.

The third incident happened the same day along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.

A tanker with registration number KUJ718XT (Abuja), also transporting 45,000 litres of PMS, skidded off the road into a ditch, with the cab immediately going up in flames.

Chairman, Oyo State Fire Service, Maroof Akinwande, confirmed the three incidents on Friday, stressing that firefighters responded promptly and ensured that no lives were lost.

“On getting to the scene of the accident, it was a MACK trailer tanker with registered number DEP175XB (Lagos) loaded with 33,000 litres capacity of PMS swerved into a nearby ditch and content gushing out.

Our officers quickly swung into action by applying chemical foam compound to suppress flammability of the content and prevented it from catching fire from surrounding”.

On the second incident, “Upon arrival, we met a trailer tanker loaded with 45, 000 liters capacity of PMS somersaulted into the road side Immediately, we swung into action by blanketing the environment with chemical foam compound to avoid any naked fire which might result to fire incident. Properties worth millions of naira was saved by the fire service”.

He said at the site of the third incident, “a trailer tanker with registration number KUJ718XT (Abuja) of 45,000 litres capacity loaded with PMS swerved to nearby ditch and the cab caught fire.

The Firemen quickly swung into action by launching a coordinated attack on the blaze through the application of chemical foam compound and curtailed the fire from spreading to the other parts of the truck”.
