The Kano State Fire Service confirmed a series of tragic incidents across the state, including the deaths of three men who suffocated inside a well while attempting to rescue one another.
The agency’s spokesperson, ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, said in a statement that the first emergency occurred at Badawa Layin Day by Day in Nassarawa Local Government Area, where firefighters responded to a house fire shortly before noon.
He explained that the building was already engulfed in flames when officers arrived, adding that two bedrooms were heavily affected.
“A 10-year-old girl was trapped inside the house. Our men rescued her unconscious, but she was later confirmed dead and handed over to her parents,” the statement said.
The fire service recorded another tragedy at Badume Kanawa Village in Bichi Local Government Area, where three men died inside a well after a rope supporting a 65-year-old man snapped.
The agency said his son and another resident who attempted to rescue him also became trapped, and although firefighters recovered them, all three were later confirmed dead.
In a separate incident in Danbatta Local Government Area, a 10-year-old boy who fell into a well was pulled out unconscious and later pronounced dead.
The Director of the Fire Service, Alhaji Sani Anas, cautioned residents to avoid climbing into wells during emergencies, insisting that the practice has repeatedly led to preventable deaths.
