The Senate has endorsed President Bola Tinubu’s request to deploy Nigerian troops to the Republic of Benin to help restore order after last weekend’s failed coup attempt.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the approval during Tuesday’s plenary, following consideration of the request in the Committee of the Whole, in accordance with Section 5, Part II of the Constitution.

Lawmakers unanimously backed the move, offering firm legislative support for the regional stabilisation mission.

Akpabio hailed the decision as necessary, warning that political turbulence in any neighbouring country could spill over and endanger the entire sub-region.

“An injury to one is an injury to all,” the lawmaker said, underscoring Nigeria’s responsibility to support its Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, partner.

DAILY POST recalls that Tinubu had written to the Senate seeking approval for the deployment of Nigerian troops to the Benin Republic.
