A child-rights advocacy group, Onurube Coalition, has urged the Imo State Police Command to take over the investigation into the alleged serial sexual exploitation of an 11-year-old girl, Ginika Obodozie, from Umudiatu Orlu Autonomous Community in Orlu Local Government Area.
The coalition, in a petition to Commissioner of Police Aboki Danjuma, alleged that the minor had been repeatedly abused by several adult men in the community, while the initial investigation at the Orlu Police Division had been compromised.
Signed by its coordinator, Marjorie Ezihe, the petition claimed the victim lives with an aunt who is suspected of facilitating the continued abuse.
“The girl’s parents are reportedly unable to protect her due to the mother’s mental health condition and the father’s medical incapacitation. The situation is further complicated by serious allegations against the Orlu Police Division.
We have credible information that the handling of the case at the Orlu Police Division was allegedly compromised through financial inducements, leading to the release of all but one suspect.” the coalition stated.
The group further alleged external interference in the matter, warning that leaving the case at divisional level threatens both justice and the child’s safety.
“Given these concerns, the continued handling of this case at the divisional level poses a threat to justice, child safety, and public interest.
The legal basis for the request is grounded in several laws, including the Imo State Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law, the Child Rights Act, and the Constitution of Nigeria, which enshrine in the state’s primary duty to ensure the security and welfare of its citizens, especially vulnerable children.” the petition read.
The coalition requested that the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) immediately assume control of the case and conduct a fresh, impartial investigation.
It also demanded a probe into alleged misconduct by personnel of the Orlu Division, along with the re-arrest and proper prosecution of suspects earlier released.
In addition, the group sought urgent protection measures for the child, including a safety assessment of her home, temporary protective custody and access to medical and psychosocial care.
The coalition stressed the severity of the allegations, noting that the minor was said to have been violated by much older men.
“Men in their 40s, 50s and 60s, with the case further compounded by the alleged police compromise and family failure in their duty of care.” the group added.
It noted that the State Police Command had already scheduled an interview with both the organisation and the victim at the time the petition was filed.
