Operatives of the Ondo State Police Command have arrested a suspected kidnapper, identified as Godspower Cletus, after he allegedly attempted to withdraw a N1 million ransom at a POS kiosk.
Cletus was said to have stormed the residence of Mrs. Farimoyo Endurance in Odudu community, Akure, where he reportedly robbed her at gunpoint, carting away her Android phone and ATM card.
During the operation, he allegedly compelled the victim to call her husband and demand a N5 million ransom, issuing threats to her life to enforce compliance.
A police source disclosed that the distraught husband transferred N1 million into his wife’s Opay account out of fear for her safety.
“Once the suspect confirmed the alert, he fled the scene, believing he had completed the operation without obstruction,” the source added.
But his escape was short-lived as operatives of the state Anti-Kidnapping Squad deployed intelligence tools to track him down.
He was subsequently arrested at a POS point while attempting to withdraw the money.
Confirming the arrest, Police Public Relations Officer, Ayanlade Olayinka, said the suspect confessed during interrogation.
He added that investigations are ongoing to ascertain whether Cletus is connected to other kidnapping or robbery incidents in the state.
Olayinka applauded the swift response of the Anti-Kidnapping Squad, describing the arrest as evidence of the command’s heightened operational readiness and commitment to tackling violent crime.
