‘Don’t Relocate Your Spouse to UK’ – Nigerian Woman Warns Compatriots Abroad

A Nigerian woman based in the United Kingdom has stirred controversy online after cautioning compatriots against relocating their spouses to the country, citing what she termed an alarming rate of marriage breakdowns among Nigerians, particularly Igbos.

In a viral video clip shared by an X user, Donpir, and obtained by Diaspora NG, the unidentified woman expressed concern over what she described as the disturbing trend of failed marriages in the UK’s Nigerian community.

“90 per cent of the UK marriages that are broken, that are separated today are Igbos… You people have failed us woefully,” she said.

The woman did not mince words as she accused Igbo couples of washing their dirty linen in public, particularly on social media platforms like TikTok, where marital disputes have become commonplace.

“It’s only Igbo men and women disgracing themselves every time. Disgracing themselves and their family,” she said.

Offering unsolicited counsel to Nigerian men in the diaspora, she stated emphatically:

“If you know you are a Nigerian man living in the UK, the only advice I can give you this early morning is to avoid bringing your wife to the UK… You will let her regret it as a man.”

She also directed her warning at women contemplating bringing their husbands to the UK, urging them to reconsider such plans.

“You also as a woman planning to bring your husband to the UK, avoid it. Don’t try it,” she warned, while suggesting that Italy is a safer destination for family relocation.

The video has since generated mixed reactions on social media, with some users criticising her sweeping generalisation while others claimed her observations reflect lived experiences within the diaspora community.
