Five passengers were injured on Monday when a commercial bus reportedly suffered brake failure and rammed into the median at the Lekki Toll Gate along the Lekki axis of Lagos State.
The accident occurred less than 24 hours after another fatal road crash in the Obanikoro area of the state, where a driver lost control of his vehicle, killing a woman and an infant.
In a statement, the spokesperson of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Adebayo Taofiq, said the crash involved a Mazda commercial bus with registration number KRD 412 XR.
He explained that the bus was allegedly travelling at high speed when its brakes failed, causing the driver to lose control and veer into the road median.
Taofiq said officials of LASTMA swiftly arrived at the scene, secured the area and coordinated rescue operations.
According to him, two of the injured passengers, who were in critical condition, were rushed to a nearby hospital by good Samaritans, while the Lagos State Ambulance Service evacuated the remaining three victims, including the driver, for urgent medical care.
He added that operatives of the Rapid Response Squad provided security support at the scene to prevent further incidents and ensure the safe evacuation of the injured.
Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed concern over the rising number of speed-related crashes on Lagos roads and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured victims.
Bakare-Oki, who spoke through Taofiq, warned motorists against excessive speeding and the use of poorly maintained vehicles, stressing the importance of alertness, adherence to speed limits and regular vehicle maintenance.
He urged road users to embrace responsible driving habits and cooperate with traffic authorities, noting that strict compliance with traffic regulations remains crucial to reducing avoidable crashes and improving road safety across the state.
