Three men suspected of motorcycle theft were lynched after a mob overran a Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) outpost in Danmaje, Dawakin Kudu Local Government Area of Kano State, the corps has confirmed.
In a press release dated December 29 and signed by SC Ibrahim Idris Abdullahi, the NSCDC command spokesman, the command said the incident occurred at about 10:30pm on Sunday, December 28, after residents of Yansango brought the three suspects to the Danmaje post.
The statement said neighbours from several communities, including Yansango, Madinawa, Gagarawa, Limawa, Yankatsari, Danmaje and Gurjiya, converged on the facility and demanded custody of the detainees. Before security reinforcements could arrive, the crowd forced entry into the office, set it ablaze and lynched the men.
Officers on duty escaped but three personnel sustained injuries and are receiving treatment, the corps added.
Describing the scene as chaotic, the NSCDC warned the public to remain calm and announced that the state commandant, acting on instructions from the Commandant-General, has established an inquiry panel to identify the perpetrators and ensure they face prosecution.
The corps urged communities to cooperate with security agencies and to allow due process to take its course rather than resorting to violence.
