The Deputy Head of Mission of the British High Commission, Simon Field, has visited world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, at a Lagos hospital following a fatal road crash on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.

The visit came as British officials and Nigerian authorities continued to monitor developments surrounding the accident, which occurred around midday on Monday and involved a Toyota Lexus vehicle conveying Joshua and three others.

In a statement issued by the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to Ogun State Governor, Kayode Akinmade, Field met with Joshua during the hospital visit and also held discussions with Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, and Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

According to the statement, the British High Commission had been formally informed of the incident and remained in close contact with the hospital and the Ogun State Government.

It added that the families of the deceased were also reached through the High Commission.
Two occupants of the vehicle were confirmed dead in the crash.

They were identified as Ayodele Kelvin Olu, a 36-year-old Nigerian-British citizen, and Gami Sina, a 36-year-old British national

Abiodun was said to have proceeded to the hospital immediately after receiving reports of the accident, where he was later joined by Sanwo-Olu.

Both governors reportedly stayed for several hours to oversee the situation and ensure that Joshua received adequate medical attention.

Speaking on the incident, Abiodun said he personally supervised the boxer’s treatment alongside his Lagos State counterpart.

He expressed satisfaction with the level of care being provided and commended the medical team for their professionalism, noting that Joshua was in a stable condition.

Other senior officials who visited the hospital included the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and the Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade.

President Bola Tinubu was also briefed on the tragedy.

The Ogun State Government disclosed that the President spoke separately with Joshua, his mother and Governor Abiodun, offering his condolences and words of comfort.

Describing the incident as a painful loss, the President called for unity and mutual support during what he termed a difficult moment for the nation.

Authorities have ordered a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances of the crash, assuring that findings would be made public at the conclusion of the probe.

The state government said further updates on Joshua’s condition and related developments would be communicated as necessary.
