Lagos goes tough arrests 45 street beggars

No fewer than 45 street beggars have been apprehended by the Lagos State Government during coordinated enforcement and mop-up operations in parts of the metropolis.

Those arrested were picked up across Alimosho, Agege and Oshodi by environmental enforcement officers as part of the state’s ongoing sanitation and compliance drive.

Confirming the exercise on Tuesday, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed the development in a post on his official X handle.

He said the latest arrests were recorded during routine enforcement activities carried out across the state. According to him, 17 persons were initially apprehended in Alimosho, while 12 others were arrested in Agege.

Wahab added that follow-up operations led to the arrest of an additional 10 beggars in Alimosho and six in Oshodi, bringing the total number to 45.

The commissioner explained that the operation aligned with the state government’s zero tolerance for street begging, which he described as an environmental nuisance and a public safety concern.

He noted that begging along highways, road medians and other public spaces exposes both the individuals involved and motorists to danger, while also disrupting public order.

Wahab reaffirmed the government’s resolve to sustain enforcement actions aimed at keeping Lagos clean, safe and orderly.
