The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Kebbi State has faulted the state government over what it described as silence and lack of decisive action following recent killings in Shanga Local Government Area.
The party’s state chairman, Safiyanu Bala, raised the concern in a New Year message to journalists on Thursday, warning that festive celebrations should not divert attention from the worsening insecurity and economic hardship confronting residents.
Bala said many Nigerians were grappling with insecurity, hunger and rising economic pressure, stressing that the challenges demanded urgent and coordinated responses from governments at all levels.
He accused the Kebbi State Government of failing to adequately address the deteriorating security situation in Yauri Emirate, particularly in Shanga LGA, where he claimed communities had come under repeated attacks in recent days.
According to him, several residents were reportedly killed over a number of days without what he described as a visible or proportionate response from the authorities.
Describing the situation as disturbing, Bala questioned the government’s sense of urgency in dealing with the violence, noting that residents were not asking for political patronage but for protection of lives, justice and immediate intervention to halt further bloodshed.
The ADC chairman also expressed concern over what he termed a shrinking democratic space, alleging harassment of opposition figures and growing pressure on politicians to defect to the ruling party.
He further criticised prevailing economic policies, especially taxation measures, arguing that they had compounded the hardship of citizens already burdened by high living costs and insecurity.
Bala called on the Kebbi State Government to make the safety of lives and property a priority in Shanga and other vulnerable communities, urging swift security action to restore peace and public confidence.
