Court fixes new date for Anthony Joshua driver’s trial

The Ogun State Police Command has brought before a Sagamu Magistrate Court the driver of the Lexus SUV involved in the crash that claimed the lives of two close associates of former heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, with the matter adjourned to January 20, 2026.

Police spokesman, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed on Friday that the defendant, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, was arraigned but proceedings were deferred to enable further legal processes.

Kayode’s appearance in court followed his arrest over the December 29, 2025 accident near Danco on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, which resulted in the deaths of Kevin Latif Ayodele, a British-Nigerian, and Sina Ghami, a British national.

Both men were part of Joshua’s training and support team.

According to police accounts, Kayode had earlier been treated for minor injuries at a Lagos hospital and was subsequently taken to Abeokuta for questioning after his discharge on New Year’s Eve.

Investigators alleged that the Lexus SUV lost control during an overtaking attempt after a tyre burst, before crashing into a truck parked by the roadside. The vehicle was said to have sustained severe damage from the impact.

While Ayodele and Ghami died at the scene, Joshua, who was seated behind the driver, and Kayode survived with minor injuries.

Although the police had earlier indicated that the driver would face charges related to reckless driving, details of the specific counts were not disclosed at the court sitting.

Meanwhile, both the Lagos and Ogun State governments have confirmed Joshua’s discharge from Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, after medical clearance.

In a joint statement, the states said Joshua and his mother later visited a Lagos funeral home where arrangements were made to repatriate the bodies of the deceased to the United Kingdom.

Governors Dapo Abiodun and Babajide Sanwo-Olu expressed appreciation to Nigerians for their sympathy and support, while also thanking President Bola Tinubu for his concern.

They commiserated with the bereaved families and prayed for strength to bear the loss.

Police sources said investigations are ongoing, including efforts to locate the driver of the truck allegedly involved in the collision.

The next court sitting on January 20 is expected to clarify the charges and progress of the case.
