Former world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, has returned to the United Kingdom following a fatal road accident in Nigeria that claimed the lives of two members of his inner circle.
British tabloid, The Sun, reported that the boxer arrived in London on Friday evening aboard a private jet, landing at Stansted Airport, days after the tragic incident along the Lagos–Ibadan expressway.
Joshua’s departure came after Nigerian police arraigned the driver involved in the crash, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, on charges of dangerous driving resulting in death. Kayode is expected to appear before a court on January 20.
The accident occurred on Monday when a Lexus SUV conveying Joshua and members of his team collided with a stationary truck on the busy highway.
The vehicle was said to be carrying Joshua, his driver Kayode, and two aides — Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami.
Authorities in Ogun State confirmed that Ayodele and Ghami died on the spot, while Joshua and the driver sustained minor injuries and were taken to hospital.
The boxer was later discharged on Wednesday.
Ghami was described as Joshua’s long-serving strength and conditioning coach, while Ayodele was his personal trainer.
Reports indicated that Joshua returned to Britain ahead of funeral arrangements for the deceased aides.
The 2012 Olympic gold medallist, who has Nigerian roots, had been in the country on vacation following his recent victory over American boxer Jake Paul in Miami on December 19.
