At least 30 people are feared dead following an attack by suspected bandits on a community in Niger State, with several others reportedly abducted during the assault.
The attackers, believed to have emerged from the Kainji Lake National Park, stormed a village market in Kabe District, Borgu Local Government Area, where they unleashed terror on residents.
Witnesses said the assailants set the market on fire after looting food items and other goods, leaving widespread destruction in their wake.
Residents further disclosed that the gunmen opened fire on villagers and abducted several people, particularly along routes leading into the vast Kainji Lake forest.
Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Wasiu Abiodun, said a joint security team had visited the affected community and launched operations to rescue those taken away.
Abiodun said preliminary reports indicated that more than 30 people lost their lives in the attack, adding that security agencies were intensifying efforts to restore calm in the area.
