Tension has gripped Okon-Aku community in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State following the killing of a youth, Mr Igwe Akuma, just days before his planned wedding.
Akuma, from the Ndi Uma compound, was reportedly murdered on Friday during a clash that broke out in the community.
The incident sparked reprisals, with angry youths setting ablaze houses, vehicles and other property belonging to some residents.
The Udumeze of Ohafia, led by Ezie Ohamoha Awa Orji Udonsi, in conjunction with the Ohafia Council of Monarchs, condemned the killing and the destruction that followed in a statement issued on Saturday.
The apex traditional body described the murder as senseless and tragic, noting that the deceased was preparing for his wedding before his life was cut short.
It commiserated with the bereaved family and insisted that no provocation could justify the killing of an Ohafia son.
The council warned that violence and arson were unacceptable and called on residents to remain calm, particularly members of the Ndi Owom and Ndi Uma compounds.
It added that it was working closely with security agencies to prevent further escalation of the crisis.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Abia State Command, DSP Maureen Chinaka, said the Divisional Police Officer in Ohafia had led a team of officers to the area and arrested some suspects in connection with the violence.
She disclosed that two police tactical teams had been deployed to restore and maintain law and order, adding that those arrested were undergoing interrogation as investigations continue.
