Tragedy struck in the Bulumkutu area of Maiduguri, Borno State, on Sunday night when a perimeter fence caved in and crushed six children, leaving five of them dead and one badly injured.

The incident occurred at about 8 pm, according to residents, sending shockwaves through the neighbourhood and plunging families into mourning.

Confirming the development on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Nahum Daso, said the matter was reported through the Divisional Police Officer of Bulumkutu Division and that investigations had commenced.

“Five of the children, all under the age of 16, died as a result of the collapse, while one sustained injuries and is presently receiving treatment in hospital,” Daso said.

He added that detectives had been assigned to determine the cause of the collapse and to establish whether negligence or structural defects were involved.

The police spokesman urged residents to pay closer attention to building standards and safety, especially in residential areas where children often play.

He also advised parents and guardians to keep a closer watch on their wards to prevent avoidable tragedies.

The latest incident has renewed concerns over structural safety in parts of Maiduguri, especially following past episodes of building and fence collapses linked to poor construction and environmental factors.

Residents called on relevant authorities to step up inspections and enforcement of building regulations to avert further loss of lives.
