The Oyo State Government has suspended the Sobaloju of Ofiki, Chief Jacob Sobaloju, over allegations of involvement in illegal mining and breaches of Executive Order 001/2023, which governs mining operations in the state.
In a letter signed by the Director of Chieftaincy Matters, Mr. Olajire A.M., and issued by the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Chief Sobaloju was accused of issuing consent letters to mining companies without proper authorisation, in violation of state regulations and forest reserve protections.
The suspension, effective from Monday, January 5, 2026, is a precautionary measure aimed at preserving the integrity of the investigation and safeguarding state-owned lands.
The government said the action was taken to protect public interest and ensure compliance with statutory rules on mining.
The letter, titled “Re: Complaint against Chief Sobaloju of Ofiki for violation of State Executive Order, Forest Reserve Regulations and encouraging trespassing of government gazetted assets,” directed the chief to halt all mining-related activities, refrain from interfering with investigators, and make himself available to authorities as required.
The Oyo State Government reiterated its commitment to a zero-tolerance policy on illegal mining, warning that anyone found culpable would face legal consequences.
