Abubakar Malami, SAN, the immediate past Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, alongside his son, Abdulaziz, and wife, Hajia Bashir Asabe, secured a total of N1.5 billion bail from the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday.
Justice Emeka Nwite, who delivered the ruling, set the bail at N1 billion for Malami and his son, while Mrs. Malami was granted N500 million.
The court stipulated that each defendant must provide two sureties of equivalent sums, with each surety owning landed property in Asokoro, Maitama, or Gwarinpa districts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The court further directed that title documents of the properties be submitted for verification.
All defendants are required to surrender their international passports, while the sureties must submit two recent passport photographs and depose to an affidavit of means.
Justice Nwite warned that the defendants are not to travel outside the country without prior court approval and will remain in custody until the bail conditions are fulfilled. The trial was adjourned to February 17, 2026.
Malami, who served as Justice Minister from November 2015 to May 2023 under former President Muhammadu Buhari, faces 16 counts of money laundering.
He was arraigned alongside his son and wife, who is alleged to have worked with Rahamaniyya Properties Limited—a company purportedly used to launder funds through real estate transactions.
