NiMet warns of hazy weather, scattered thunderstorms nationwide

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a three-day forecast warning of hazy conditions and bouts of sunshine across the country, beginning Wednesday.

In its weather outlook released in Abuja, NiMet projected that most parts of the North will come under persistent hazy conditions through the period.

Dry and sunny spells are expected to dominate the atmosphere as dust haze lingers.

The agency noted that southern states will experience clearer skies, though pockets of cloudiness are expected.

It added that isolated thunderstorms accompanied by light rainfall may occur later in the day in parts of Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River.

For Thursday, the forecast maintains hazy conditions across the northern belt and the central region.

The South is expected to remain largely sunny with intermittent clouds.

Early morning thunderstorms are likely over parts of Ogun, Lagos, Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom and Cross River, with more storms anticipated later in the day in Ondo, Imo and Delta alongside other coastal communities.

NiMet further projected that by Friday, the North will wake up to hazy skies, which could thicken into dust haze as the day progresses. Central states are also expected to remain under hazy conditions.

The agency said the southern corridor may experience breaks of sunshine beneath cloudy skies, with possible thunderstorms and light rains in Anambra, Imo, Abia, Edo, Bayelsa, Delta, Akwa Ibom, Cross River and Rivers.

NiMet cautioned that dust particles are already suspended in the atmosphere over several North-Central states, urging residents—especially those with asthma and other respiratory challenges—to take precautions.

It advised motorists to exercise care while driving during rainfall and called on airline operators to obtain up-to-date airport weather reports before operations.

NiMet urged Nigerians to stay informed via its official channels for routine updates.
