Renowned novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her husband, Dr. Ivara Esege, have been thrown into mourning following the death of one of their twin sons.
The toddler, Nkanu Nnamdi, was said to have passed away on Wednesday after a short illness.
News of the tragedy was confirmed yesterday in a statement issued by Adichie’s representative, Omawumi Ogbe, who conveyed the family’s grief and appealed for understanding from the public.
The statement read:
“We confirm with deep sorrow the passing of Nkanu Nnamdi, the son of Ms Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Dr Ivara Esege, who died on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, after a brief illness. He was 21 months old.”
It added:
“The family is devastated by this profound loss, and we request that their privacy be respected during this incredibly difficult time. No further announcement will be made.”
Adichie, 48, and her husband married in 2009. The couple welcomed their first child, a daughter, in 2016 and later twin boys in 2024.
The author disclosed in a 2025 interview that she deliberately shielded details about her children from the public in a bid to protect them from unwanted attention.
She said:
“I want to protect my children. I’m okay with having them mentioned, but I don’t want the piece to become about them.
Nigerians are very curious about personal lives, and I am resistant. I very rarely talk about it.”
