Labour Party’s 2023 vice presidential candidate Yusuf Datti Baba Ahmed has renewed his call for a new crop of political leaders to steer the country lamenting that the same personalities have continued to dominate the presidential field for decades.
Speaking on Channels Television yesterday Datti took a swipe at former Vice President Atiku Abubakar noting that the Peoples Democratic Party PDP flagbearer had been chasing the presidency since the days he Datti served in the National Youth Service Corps NYSC.
“I remember clearly when I was doing my NYSC Alhaji Atiku was already an aspirant he said.
Datti recalled squaring up with Atiku in different election cycles first at the PDP presidential primaries in 2018 and again in the 2023 general election where both men ran on rival platforms.
In 2023 we met again me as a vice presidential candidate on another ticket after his running mate abandoned him And now there is talk of 2027 he queried.
The former lawmaker maintained that Nigerias future lies with a younger generation waiting to serve but frustrated by a political structure he described as expensive treacherous and controlled by power brokers.
There are competent Nigerians ready to lead and rescue this country but they are held back by a system filled with godfathers bad promises and staggering financial barriers he lamented.
Datti dismissed circulating claims suggesting that he had already declared interest in the 2027 presidency insisting that he had made no such pronouncement.
He argued that what Nigeria needs urgently is credible leadership that will open opportunities for emerging talents who can restore public confidence and drive national renewal.
