Family recounts N3m ransom demand before killing of Abuja lawyer

The family of an Abuja-based lawyer, Nwamaka Chigbo, has narrated the disturbing circumstances surrounding her death after she was allegedly abducted by suspected kidnappers in the Federal Capital Territory.

Chigbo’s body was found days later along the Kubwa Expressway, while her bag was reportedly recovered some distance away, a pattern often associated with “one-chance” criminal attacks in the city.

The Cable which cited Daily Trust, said that in a statement issued by her sister, Maureen Chigbo, publisher of Realnews Magazine, the family said the lawyer was abducted on Monday, January 5, 2026, while she was on the phone with her sister, Anthonia.

The family said the call was briefly interrupted, but when it reconnected, Anthonia allegedly heard her sister screaming for help before the line went dead.

They said repeated attempts to reach her phone initially failed, but when contact was eventually made, a male voice reportedly demanded a ransom of N3m, threatening to kill her if the money was not paid.

According to the family, the incident was reported to the police, with senior officers of the FCT Police Command contacted, while efforts were said to have been made to track the abductors.

Despite assurances from security operatives, the family said they were later informed that a critically injured woman had been taken to a specialist hospital in Abuja, where Nwamaka was eventually identified.

The family added that police authorities had assured them that investigations were ongoing, noting that the deceased was a former treasurer of the Nigerian Bar Association, Abuja branch, and a member of the International Federation of Women Lawyers.
