A passenger who survived Saturday’s attack on a Benue Links bus travelling from Makurdi to Lagos has described the harrowing moment gunmen riddled the vehicle with bullets, saying occupants feared they would not survive.
The commercial bus, which was fully loaded, came under fire shortly after departing Otukpo.
The ambush reportedly occurred near the Burnt Bricks stretch of road, between two security checkpoints.
“We were on our way to Lagos around the Otukpo axis when armed robbers suddenly attacked,” the survivor said, visibly shaken.
“They kept shooting, shooting, shooting non-stop.
They shot three people in the process,” he narrated, adding that panic swept through the bus as passengers scrambled for safety.
According to him, many believed the end had come.
“We thought we would die. We thank God for life. I am still in shock right now,” he added.
Three passengers sustained gunshot wounds and were rushed to the Federal University of Health Sciences Teaching Hospital, Otukpo, where they are currently receiving treatment. Other travellers escaped unhurt.
As of press time, security agencies had not issued a formal response to the attack, even as commuters and residents expressed growing concern over repeated violent incidents along the Otukpo corridor.
