Rivers lawmakers backtrack on fresh move to sack Fubara

Two members of the Rivers State House of Assembly who earlier backed the move to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara have now withdrawn support for the plan.

Minority Leader, Sylvanus Nwankwo, representing Omuma Constituency, and Peter Abbey of Degema Constituency, announced their change of position at a media briefing in Port Harcourt on Monday.

The lawmakers appealed to their colleagues to halt the impeachment process and allow reconciliation efforts to take root.

Nwankwo, speaking on behalf of the duo, said the reversal followed overwhelming pleas from senior statesmen and respected community figures across the state.

He said, “A notice of impeachment has been issued against the governor and his deputy.

However, after engagements with elders and leaders within and beyond Rivers State, we are urging members to sheath their swords and pursue peace.

“We ask that justice be tempered with mercy so the tension rocking the state can be resolved without pushing through with the impeachment.”

The lawmakers admitted that while some constitutional breaches were alleged, dialogue and internal resolution remained the best path.

The Assembly had last Thursday served Governor Fubara and Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu with impeachment notices citing alleged gross misconduct.
