The Enugu State Police Command says it has recovered two stolen vehicles and arrested six suspects in separate operations targeting a rising trend of vehicle theft across the state.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, disclosed the development in a statement on Sunday, noting that the arrests followed sustained intelligence-driven policing.
According to him, operatives of the New Haven Division tracked down a Mitsubishi L300 bus stolen on December 31, 2025, and found it abandoned in the Ogui axis on January 8, 2026.
Four men identified as Hassan Sheyu, 29; Bashiru Yusuf, 37; Alago Yusuf, 30; and Idris Abisolamu, 28 were apprehended over the theft, while a suspected buyer of stolen vehicles, Nwanneka Isiugwu, was arrested for allegedly purchasing the bus for ₦1.7m.
“In line with credible intelligence received, operatives recovered the bus and arrested four principal suspects,” Ndukwe stated.
He added that Isiugwu confessed during interrogation to buying the vehicle from the gang for ₦1,700,000.
In a related bust, officers attached to Udenu Division arrested a mechanic, Friday Onuh, 27, at Obollo-Afor on January 7 and recovered a Toyota Camry 2.4 reportedly taken from its owner in Victoria Island, Lagos.
Police said the suspect admitted he fled with the vehicle after it was entrusted to him for repairs.
“The vehicle’s rightful owner was traced and confirmed the theft,” the police spokesman said.
Commenting on the breakthroughs, Commissioner of Police, CP Bitrus Giwa, reiterated the command’s resolve to clamp down on criminal networks operating within the state.
“Enugu is not a safe haven for crime,” Giwa warned, urging members of the public to support security agencies with credible information.
He also called on car owners to secure their assets by installing trackers, locks and working only with trusted professionals.
The police noted that investigations are ongoing, and efforts are underway to arrest other fleeing accomplices.
All suspects, according to the command, will be arraigned upon conclusion of inquiries.
