Nigeria’s gospel community has been thrown into mourning following the death of popular singer, Bunmi Akinnaanu, widely known as Omije Ojumi.
Akinnaanu’s passing
was confirmed on Tuesday through a statement posted on Instagram by fellow gospel musician, Ayo Melody, who issued the announcement on behalf of the family.
The brief release, shared with a photograph and tribute video, disclosed that the evangelist breathed her last on January 12, 2026, at a hospital in Lagos.
Part of the message read, “With great sadness, we announce the passing of Evangelist Olubunmi Akinnaanu Adeoye, Omije Ojumi, who departed on January 12, 2026, at a Lagos hospital. May God grant her eternal rest.”
While the family did not disclose the cause of death, the singer had openly requested prayers late last year following lingering complications affecting her leg.
A viral clip from an October 2025 church service at G.F. David Ministries in Ibadan showed the artist seated with her leg extended on a chair as a cleric interceded over what he described as persistent bleeding and a spiritual attack.
Akinnaanu rose to fame after releasing her hit song Omije Ojumi, which became an anthem across churches and Christian gatherings.
Tributes have continued to pour in from fans, ministers and colleagues, celebrating her impact on gospel music and ministry.
