A commercial motorcyclist and his passenger have been crushed to death by a petrol tanker at Pokia Junction, inward Araga, along the Epe Ijebu corridor of Lagos State.

The fatal crash occurred on Monday and followed a wrong way movement by the rider, according to findings by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority.

A statement issued by the agency’s Public Affairs Director, Adebayo Taofiq, said the Okada rider, who was conveying a male passenger, rode against traffic and ran into an oncoming tanker that was travelling at high speed.

The impact reportedly killed both men instantly.

Taofiq said LASTMA officials arrived swiftly, took the tanker driver into custody and secured the scene to prevent further accidents while alerting relevant agencies including the FRSC.

He added that the victims’ remains and the apprehended driver were handed over to police operatives at the Noforija division for further investigation and prosecution.

To restore movement and prevent gridlock, LASTMA said the empty tanker was removed from the road moments after the crash.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, described the crash as avoidable, insisting that adherence to traffic safety rules could have averted the tragedy.

Giwa, who condoled with the bereaved families, said the incident underscored the dangers of indiscipline on Lagos roads and reaffirmed the government’s resolve to step up traffic enforcement and public education.
