An Abuja High Court has struck out criminal charges filed by the Federal Government against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, bringing to a close a case that ignited nationwide conversations on free speech and political rights.
The lawmaker, who represents Kogi Central, secured relief on Thursday after the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation entered a notice of discontinuance, prompting the court to terminate the proceedings.
The charges arose from comments attributed to Akpoti-Uduaghan during a television appearance, a development that triggered fierce public debate over the scope of political commentary and the boundaries of prosecutorial authority in a democracy.
In the notice dated December 12, 2025, the AGF informed the court of government’s intention to halt the case, identified as suit number FHC/ABJ/CR/195/2025.
Presiding judge, Justice C. N. Oji, acknowledged the withdrawal and struck the matter out, remarking that the development should serve as a reminder on the careful exercise of state prosecutorial powers.
“The court hopes that this decision will pave the way for restraint, healing, and respect for the rule of law in our democratic process,” Justice Oji stated.
Federal Government counsel confirmed the withdrawal in court, saying the move aligned with the provisions of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act.
“This decision is taken in the overall interest of justice and public confidence in the legal system,” he said.
Reacting after the ruling, Akpoti-Uduaghan described the court’s decision as vindication, saying she remained undeterred in her legislative responsibilities.
“Today’s outcome affirms my belief in the rule of law. I remain committed to serving my constituents and defending the democratic rights of all Nigerians,” the senator said, while expressing gratitude to her legal team and supporters.
The development follows sustained criticism by civic groups and rights advocates who earlier denounced the prosecution as an attempt to clamp down on dissent and shrink democratic space.
