Fresh violence has erupted in Turan District of Kwande Local Government Area, Benue State, where two farmers were killed and scores of residents displaced following an attack by suspected armed herders.
The raid, which occurred on Wednesday, reportedly began in Imande Avu—also called Imande Avur—and spread to neighbouring Abande and Mbaikyor communities.
Victims were identified as Elder Abur Alam and his son, Ikyaabashi, said to have been working on their farmland when they were ambushed by the attackers.
Locals blamed the killings on suspected Fulani militants, describing the invasion as another unprovoked assault that has plunged the district into fear and instability.
Residents have since fled in large numbers, abandoning homes and farms amid fears of further incursions, worsening the humanitarian burden in the area.
A community member, Kummeh Aondona MC Riskid, appealed to Governor Hyacinth Alia to intervene urgently to secure vulnerable settlements.
Also speaking, a former councillor, Lawrence Akerigba, decried the persistence of the attacks, saying Turan communities had come under near-daily raids in the past two weeks.
“Again, there was a brutal assault yesterday. Two innocent farmers were killed, many displaced, and the entire area is gripped by fear,” he said.
“Our people are being attacked and killed every day. It looks as though the government has forgotten us.
These raids continue unchecked, with devastating consequences,” he added, calling for urgent deployment of security operatives and relief support.
When contacted, the spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, DSP Udeme Edet, said she had yet to receive details of the incident.
