2027: Baba Ahmed has no right to bar Atiku – Group

The Omoluabi Coalition has criticised the growing involvement of Hakeem Baba Ahmed in opposition politics, accusing him of working to undermine opposition unity ahead of the 2027 general election.

In a statement issued on Friday and signed by its Convener, Olumide Obayemi, the group faulted Baba Ahmed’s repeated calls on former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race.

The coalition said the decision to seek elective office is a constitutional and personal right that cannot be dictated by individuals who lack any democratic mandate.

It expressed concern that Baba Ahmed, since leaving President Bola Tinubu’s administration, has refrained from offering strong criticism of the government despite what it described as worsening economic hardship and social distress.

Instead, the group alleged that Baba Ahmed had focused his public interventions on attacking opposition figures and parties, particularly the African Democratic Congress, a development it said raised questions about his true political intentions.

The coalition described as hypocritical Baba Ahmed’s claim of neutrality, arguing that his silence on government failures contrasted sharply with his frequent criticism of opposition efforts to reposition Nigeria.

It also rejected his stance on debates around zoning, succession and leadership, insisting that Nigerians from all regions, including the South East, have the right to articulate political demands within democratic limits.

The group said supporters of Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar and other aspirants are equally entitled to canvass their views, stressing that democracy thrives on open engagement rather than suppression.

According to the coalition, Baba Ahmed’s comments risk deepening divisions within the opposition and inadvertently strengthening the ruling party ahead of the next election.

The group challenged him to clarify whether he was acting as an independent commentator or serving interests opposed to genuine opposition consolidation, urging Nigerians to remain vigilant against actions capable of weakening democratic competition.
