Igboho set to return to Nigeria today as supporters gather in Ibadan

Barring any last-minute change, Yoruba nation agitator, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, is expected to return to Nigeria today (Monday), January 26, 2026.

A source close to the development told The PUNCH that the activist, who has been outside the country for years, is already on his way back, following assurances that he is no longer being sought by security agencies.

Igboho’s spokesman, Olayomi Koiki, had earlier disclosed that arrangements had been concluded for his principal’s return after prominent traditional rulers reportedly intervened and prevailed on President Bola Tinubu to remove his name from the list of wanted persons.

Among the monarchs said to have played key roles in the intervention are the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja; the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi; and the Olugbon of Orile Igbon, Oba Francis Alao, among others.

It was gathered that upon his arrival, Igboho would proceed to the palace of the Olubadan in Ibadan as part of his first official engagements.

Meanwhile, security presence has reportedly been strengthened around Igboho’s residence in Soka area of Ibadan, with policemen and other security operatives seen at strategic points.

Confirming the development, Koiki said Igboho was already en route to the country from the Benin Republic, where he has been residing.

“As I’m speaking to you, Chief Sunday Adeyemo is on his way to Nigeria. He should be here any moment from now.

He is on his way to Ibadan to meet the Olubadan today by the special grace of God,” he said.

Koiki added that Igboho’s return followed sustained interventions by traditional rulers, political goodwill and continued advocacy by Yoruba leaders within and outside Nigeria.

As of the time of filing this report, Igboho’s supporters had begun trooping to his Ibadan residence to welcome him.

Yoruba socio-cultural groups, including the Oodua Peoples’ Congress, Agbekoya Vigilante group and Ifelodun Security Network, were also sighted at the location.

Igboho had last visited Nigeria in 2024 during the burial rites of his late mother.
