Police officers on Wednesday fired tear gas to disperse residents protesting alleged forced evictions and demolitions across parts of Lagos State.
The protesters, who had converged on the Lagos State House of Assembly complex in Ikeja, were calling for an end to the demolitions and demanding government intervention.
Eyewitnesses said the situation became tense when security operatives moved in to prevent the protesters from gaining access to the complex, leading to the discharge of tear gas canisters.
Some of the demonstrators were seen fleeing the area as others struggled to regroup amid the disruption.
The protest is linked to recent demolition exercises in waterfront and low-income communities within the state, which residents say have left many displaced.
As of the time of filing this report, security operatives remained stationed around the Assembly complex, while the protest had been largely dispersed.
