No fewer than two hunters were killed on Tuesday after suspected armed bandits attacked a group in a forest in Tangaza Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
The incident reportedly occurred around 4:30 p.m. inside the Kadidda Forest while the hunters were on what was described as a hunting exhibition.
Security analyst Zagazola Makama disclosed the attack in a post shared on X on Wednesday.
According to the post, the hunters were ambushed by a large number of armed men believed to be bandits, who opened fire on them at close range.
Two members of the group were fatally shot during the attack, while others fled the scene and later reported the incident at the Tangaza Divisional Police Headquarters.
One of the deceased hunters was identified as 30-year-old Nura Usman from Magonho Village. The identity of the second victim had yet to be confirmed as of the time of filing this report.
Security sources said troops from a nearby Army Forward Operating Base, in collaboration with other security agencies, were immediately mobilised to the area.
However, the attackers were said to have escaped before the arrival of security operatives.
The bodies of the slain hunters were evacuated from the forest and taken to a hospital in Tangaza.
Meanwhile, security forces have intensified patrols and launched a manhunt across the forest and surrounding communities in an effort to track down the perpetrators
