The Independent National Electoral Commission has said it is fully prepared for the 2027 general election, despite delays by the National Assembly in passing the amended Electoral Act.

The commission disclosed that it has concluded work on the election timetable and schedule of activities for the polls.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, made this known on Wednesday in Abuja during a meeting with representatives of Civil Society Organisations.

Amupitan said the commission had already forwarded its recommendations on the proposed amendments to the National Assembly, noting, however, that the timing of the passage of the new law could affect certain aspects of the election schedule.

He explained that until the lawmakers conclude work on the amendment, INEC would continue to operate based on the existing Electoral Act.

According to him, the commission has no option for now but to plan and conduct its activities in line with the current legal framework, while making adjustments where necessary once a new Act is enacted.
