The Ondo State Police Command has launched an investigation into the death of two young men following a drowning incident at a hotel in Akungba-Akoko, Akoko South-West Local Government Area of the state.
The incident occurred on January 29, 2026, during a swimming pool party organised by Unibercity Lounge and Hotel for newly matriculated students.
A police source said the incident was reported at the Akungba Divisional Police Headquarters by the hotel’s pool manager, identified as Shittu, who informed the police that one of the guests, Adegbola Blessing, 19, was found unconscious in the pool around 8pm.
He was reportedly rescued, given first aid and regained consciousness before being taken home by his friends.
However, not long after, another guest, Oludere Opeyemi, 22, was also discovered unconscious in the same swimming pool.
He was rescued and rushed to the State Hospital, Ikare-Akoko, where he was confirmed dead by medical personnel.
Operatives of the Akungba Division were immediately deployed to the scene to commence preliminary investigations, while the hotel manager, Ayomide Badejo, and the pool manager were invited for questioning.
Police sources further disclosed that in the early hours of January 30, 2026, Adegbola, who was earlier revived, was reported to have also died.
Following the development, the case was transferred to the command’s Monitoring Unit for a detailed and discreet investigation.
The bodies of the deceased were deposited at the State Hospital, Ikare-Akoko morgue for preservation and autopsy.
The Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal, urged hotel owners and operators across the state to prioritise the safety of guests by ensuring adequate supervision and functional safety measures, particularly around swimming pool facilities.
