Terror attack empties Kwara community as residents flee to Niger

Residents of Woro community in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State have fled their homes to neighbouring Niger State following a deadly terrorist attack that reportedly claimed more than 176 lives.

The assault, which began on Tuesday evening and stretched into Wednesday morning, triggered panic across the community and surrounding villages, forcing families to flee with little or no belongings.

A video circulating online and sighted by our correspondent on Saturday showed displaced residents taking refuge in Wawa town, Niger State.

Several vehicles believed to have transported them from Kwara were seen parked nearby.

In the footage, some of the victims were seated on plastic chairs beneath a makeshift shelter, while others sat on the bare ground.

Also, women and children were seen huddled together, many appearing visibly distressed and exhausted.

Confirming the development, the Special Assistant to the Chairman of Kaiama Local Government Area, ZulQharnain Musa, told Sunday PUNCH that Woro community had been completely deserted in the aftermath of the attack.

“As of Saturday, the entire community has been deserted. Residents have fled to neighbouring communities, including parts of Niger State and Kaiama town. Some who escaped through the forest also ended up in Baruten,” he said.

Musa disclosed that security operatives had been deployed to the area to restore order and prevent further attacks.

“There is currently an army battalion stationed in the community, following directives from President Bola Tinubu,” he added.

Despite the deployment, Musa noted that many residents were still reluctant to return, citing fear of renewed violence and concerns over their safety, as families continue to seek refuge in host communities.
