The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Bauchi State Council, has confirmed the death of Channels Television cameraman, Kani Ben, nine days after he was involved in a road accident.
Umar Said, the NUJ State Chairman, made the disclosure on Sunday while speaking with journalists, describing the incident as tragic.
“Mr Ben was a committed professional who sustained serious injuries while on duty during a motor accident in Bauchi,” Said said.
The accident occurred as Ben was covering the commissioning and handover of projects by the North-East Development Commission, in the company of the Minister of State for Regional Development, Uba Maigari.
Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State has also expressed his condolences to the family of the late journalist.
In a statement released on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, the governor described Ben’s death as “painful and heartbreaking.”
Mohammed lauded the deceased for his dedication to journalism, noting that he remained devoted to keeping Nigerians informed until his last moments.
He extended sympathy to Ben’s family, Channels Television, the NUJ, and the broader media community.
Praying for the repose of Ben’s soul, the governor urged family, colleagues, and friends to draw strength during this difficult period.
He reaffirmed Bauchi State’s support for journalists who often risk their lives in the line of duty.
