At least three residents were killed, several others injured, and multiple homes razed following an attack on Garga community in Kanam Local Government Area of Plateau State on Monday night.
The assailants, believed to be Fulani gunmen, reportedly stormed the village on motorcycles, firing indiscriminately.
Eyewitnesses said more than 100 heavily armed men carried out the raid, forcing villagers to flee into nearby forests and rocky areas for safety.
The attackers allegedly set houses ablaze and made away with livestock and food supplies.
Salihu Garga, a resident, told reporters that such attacks have become a recurring threat in the area due to inadequate security presence. “The bandits have repeatedly targeted Garga and other Kanam communities. Last night, they killed three people, injured others, and burnt houses. Some villagers are still missing,” he said.
Local vigilantes and hunters from Garga and surrounding villages reportedly pursued the attackers, who eventually withdrew.
Efforts to reach the Plateau State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Alfred Alabo, for official confirmation were unsuccessful, as calls and messages to his mobile phone went unanswered.
