The Rivers State House of Assembly on Thursday suspended the impeachment process it commenced against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, following the intervention of President Bola Tinubu.

The decision was reached during plenary shortly after lawmakers reconvened in Port Harcourt, the state capital, effectively putting an end, for now, to the impeachment notice earlier served on thesuspend the pr officials.

The Assembly had, at its first sitting in 2026, set the impeachment machinery in motion, accusing the governor and his deputy of gross misconduct.

Among the allegations levelled against them were the demolition of the State House of Assembly complex and the purported expenditure of public funds without legislative authorisation.

Thursday’s resolution to suspend the proceedings followed reported high-level consultations, including the President’s involvement, aimed at easing the lingering political tension in the state.

Although the House did not provide extensive details of the agreement reached, the suspension is widely seen as a move to douse the escalating crisis that has trailed the relationship between the executive and legislative arms in the oil-rich state.
