PDP clinches Gwagwalada chairmanship seat in FCT polls

The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Mohammed Kasim, has been declared winner of the Gwagwalada Area Council chairmanship election conducted on Saturday as part of the Federal Capital Territory area council polls.

Kasim secured 22,165 votes to defeat his closest challenger, Yahaya Shehu of the All Progressives Congress, who garnered 17,788 votes.

The Returning Officer for the exercise, Philip Akpen, announced the results in the early hours of Sunday, describing the poll as peaceful and orderly.

He stated that having satisfied the requirements of the law and scored the highest number of valid votes cast, Kasim was duly returned elected as chairman of Gwagwalada Area Council.

According to the results declared, Biko Umar of the All Progressives Grand Alliance came third with 1,687 votes.

A breakdown of the figures released showed that out of 207,577 registered voters in the council, 46,294 were accredited for the election.

The results indicated that 43,960 votes were valid, while 1,521 ballots were rejected.

Other parties recorded the following votes: ADC – 1,366; SDP – 432; NNPP – 175; YPP – 158; ADP – 128; AA – 116; A – 151; and APM – 24.

The election formed part of the chairmanship and councillorship contests conducted across the six area councils in the Federal Capital Territory.
