Monday Okpebholo, Governor of Edo State, has condemned the recent attack on members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing it as a troubling escalation of internal party conflicts that has gone too far.
In a statement released on Tuesday evening, Okpebholo expressed sympathy for the victims and criticized those who allegedly exploited Edo State’s peaceful environment to incite violence.
“As peace-loving citizens, we categorically condemn and will not tolerate the importation of thugs and miscreants from outside the state under the guise of political activity,” the governor said, emphasizing his role as the state’s Chief Security Officer in ensuring Edo remains free from political violence.
Okpebholo noted that while the exact motive for the attack is yet unclear, he believes it was aimed at tarnishing Edo’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s most peaceful states.
He stressed that no form of political intimidation would weaken the support of Edo residents for their government.
“Politics should focus on performance, engagement with the populace, and the continuous efforts to earn public trust. This is the foundation of our reputation, and we are committed to maintaining it,” he added.
The governor also condemned the use of violence for electoral gains, describing it as a sign of a lack of integrity and respect for the electorate.
He affirmed that his administration welcomes constructive opposition but will not be cowed by blackmail or attacks aimed at destabilizing the state.
