Two arrested over deadly home invasion in Abuja

Operatives of the Federal Capital Territory Police Command have apprehended two suspected armed robbers over the invasion of a residence in the Asokoro area of Abuja, during which a security guard was killed and valuables carted away.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday, noting that the suspects allegedly stormed the property in January 2026 alongside other gang members, murdered the guard on duty and fled with cash, a vehicle and other items.

According to her, the command received a complaint that armed men broke into the Asokoro residence, where they strangled the security operative, Ishaku Marcus, before making away with an undisclosed sum of money, jewellery, laptops, wrappers and a silver Toyota Camry.

Adeh explained that operatives attached to the Scorpion Squad immediately launched an intelligence-driven operation which led to the arrest of two principal suspects, Amaechi Edemba, 46, and Kelechi Nwokoro, 48, between February 12 and 19, 2026.

Preliminary investigations, she said, revealed that Nwokoro had previously worked as a security guard for the property owner but was disengaged in January 2026 over alleged negligence while on duty.

“Out of resentment following his dismissal, he allegedly teamed up with Amaechi Edemba and recruited four other accomplices from Nasarawa State to carry out the attack,” Adeh stated.

She added that the former guard reportedly exploited his knowledge of the premises to disable the CCTV system and cut off electricity supply before ushering the armed gang into the compound.

The suspects were said to have encountered the on-duty guard, overpowered him and strangled him before escaping with the stolen items.

Adeh confirmed that the stolen Toyota Camry and other exhibits had been recovered, while efforts were ongoing to track down other fleeing members of the gang.

Commending the officers for their professionalism, the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Miller Dantawaye, urged residents to properly profile domestic staff with the police before employment.

He also advised members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements or activities to security agencies through the command’s emergency lines.
